Penang Bridge connects the
mainland of Peninsular Malaysia with Penang Island. The bridge was built by
Malaysian Highway Authority and was fully completed and opened to the public in
14 September 1984. It stretches for 13.5 km making it among the longest bridges
in the world. It connects Gelugor on the island side and Seberang Prai on the
mainland. The bridge was designed by Penang resident, Prof. Chin Fong Kee a
well-known civil engineer.
The bridge is also linked to the
North-South Expressway in Prai and Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway in Penang.
The main portion of the bridge which stretches 225 metres was built using the
‘cable-stayed girder’ method and its highest point measures 32 metres from sea
level. Originally the bridge was built with 2 carriageway on each side but has
been expanded to 3 and widens to 4 carriageway each in the main portion.
